Standard Formula

How Volumetric Weight Works

In air freight logistics, low-density cargo takes up a large portion of cargo hold volume relative to its actual mass. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) defines the global conversion divisor as 5,000 cm³/kg:

Dimensional Formula (IATA Standard)
Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 5,000

* All dimensions are measured in centimeters (cm); dividing by 5,000 yields the weight in kilograms (KG).

Compare the volumetric result with the actual parcel weight on the scale.

The greater value between actual weight and dimensional weight is used as the official billable freight weight.

Real Case Studies

Weight Calculation Examples

Two clear scenarios showing how volumetric vs actual weight comparisons work in practice.

Example ICase 1

Volumetric Package (Bulky & Lightweight)

Dimensions: 30 cm × 20 cm × 15 cm
Formula: (30 × 20 × 15) ÷ 5,000 = 1.8 KG
Actual Scale: 1 KG

A carton measures 30cm Length, 20cm Width & 15cm Height with an actual scale weight of 1KG. Because its dimensional weight reaches 1.8KG, the freight billing is based on 2KG (rounded up to the next integer).

Billable Freight Weight:2 KG
Example IICase 2

Dense Package (Heavy & Compact)

Dimensions: 50 cm × 70 cm × 90 cm
Formula: (50 × 70 × 90) ÷ 5,000 = 63 KG
Actual Scale: 70 KG

A carton measures 50cm Length, 70cm Width & 90cm Height with an actual scale weight of 70KG. Because the volumetric calculation is only 63KG, the freight billing is based on the 70KG scale weight.

Cost Optimization Tips

4 Ways to Reduce Volumetric Weight

Simple packing strategies that save significant shipping charges on overseas packages.

Select Precision-Sized Boxes

Use boxes tailored closely to the size of your items. Empty interior space inflates package dimensions and unnecessarily increases air freight costs.

Use Vacuum Compression Bags

When shipping apparel, winter coats, quilts, or plush items, remove air using vacuum bags to compress volume by up to 50%.

Seal Firmly Without Bulging

Ensure outer cardboard panels stay flat and avoid bulging when taped. Airline laser scanners always measure the outermost points on each side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions Regarding Weight & Dimensions

Why does international air cargo use the 5,000 divisor?

The divisor 5,000 is the official global standard established by IATA (International Air Transport Association). Airplanes have strictly limited cargo hold volume as well as maximum takeoff weight, so lightweight but large boxes take up valuable cargo space.

How does rounding work for billable weight?

Standard international couriers round up to the nearest 0.5 kg for packages under 20 kg, and to the nearest 1.0 kg for heavier shipments. For example, 1.2 kg is billed as 1.5 kg, and 2.6 kg is billed as 3.0 kg.

Can I combine multiple packages into one shipment?

Yes! Top Kurir supports multi-package shipments under a single master air waybill. The billable weight of each individual package is calculated first, and then summed together for the final billable total.
